What is Bajiquan?

Bajiquan ('Eight Extremes Fist') is a Chinese martial art which is nicknamed “the bodyguard’s fist", as it’s practitioners have been part of the personal guards of major figures, from generals to emperors in Chinese history. The Special Forces of Taiwan still use Bajiquan as their hand-to-hand combat training. It is characterised by using agile footwork to get within close range of the attacker and strike or throw them with explosive force in all eight directions.

Bajiquan Training

We combine classical and modern training methods, focussing on martial techniques and forms, as well as the fitness, physical conditioning and reflexes to put them into practice. Bajiquan training develops aerobic fitness, flexibility, joint mobility and agility. It also helps develop good posture and strong legs, back and core - the foundations for all human activity.

Forms & Techniques

Bajiquan, like many traditional Chinese martial arts contains a large number of "forms" - choreographed sequences designed to build the basic foundations for martial application and provide and outlet solo training. There are many of these forms in Bajiquan, but the main focus for beginners is on Xiaojia (Small Frame) and Danda. Other foundations of our training are Liu Da Ka (Six Big Openings), close combat techniques for creating openings in our opponent's structure to deliver attacks. We also include partnered application training, optional sparring and body conditioning in our curriculum.

Body & Mind

Chinese martial arts are not only for fighting and self-defence, but also focus on cultivation of spirit, character and physical well-being. One of the reasons for the long-lasting appeal of traditional Kung Fu, is that practitioners learn to move in harmony with their body and mind, protecting and strengthening their body in a way that allows for continued practice well into old age. Bajiquan emphasises whole body movement, loosened joints and strong posture with no extraneous jumping or other extreme movements. Mentally, Bajiquan promotes discipline, commitment, courage and adaptability.
